The UAE’s history shows the great things we can achieve through collaboration and perseverance. Today, our nation continues to look forward. During the last 15 years we have played a vital role in developing Dubai’s knowledge-based economy by creating 10 world-class Free Zone clusters that have attracted thousands of businesses, serving a consumer market of more than 2 billion people across the Middle East, North and East Africa and South Asia.  By providing a business-friendly regulatory and policy environment we have helped industry leaders to establish a base to serve their customers in the region, and supported entrepreneurs and small businesses on their path to growth and competitiveness. Our 10 clusters host diverse industry ecosystems spanning the following creative industries: Media and Entertainment, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Design, and other knowledge-based industries such as Human Capital Development, Higher Education, Outsourcing, Life Sciences, Energy and Environment.  These industries spur innovation and entrepreneurship and have important spill-over effects in other economic sectors. According to the 2014 World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report, the UAE is the most competitive country in the region, and the 8th most competitive in the world.  The Global Innovation Index, produced by Cornell University, INSEAD and WIPO, ranks the UAE as the most innovative in the region.  The UAE’s Free Zones have undoubtedly contributed to these achievements. In launching Dubai’s strategy for innovation-led growth, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has laid out a bold vision for our future as a leading innovation economy.   To support this strategy, the mandate and scope of the Authority has broadened to focus not just on supporting our clusters but on fostering the growth of creative industries across the city of Dubai. Going forward we will place greater emphasis on entrepreneurship and talent in the creative industries, ensuring that creative individuals have the knowledge, skills and support to innovate. We will put the right platforms and support structures in place to ensure that Dubai becomes the premier location for the creative industries – a world-class creative hub where ideas are born and dreams are realised.
